01 // OneI've listened to the acoustic versions of this song and absolutely love them, even more-so than the album version because it's a little more upbeat. Listening to this song makes me feel like he's lost and drifting, searching for something which kind of ties in with the lyrics. I think it's a great song to start the album as it's quite similar to the first one. It kind of entices you because it's familiar and you initially want more of the same when you pick up the album. Obviously everyone's heard Sing so we know not all songs will be like One which is quite exciting.
02 // I'm a MessNot a favourite yet but I can see it becoming one as it seems like this is one of those songs you appreciate a lot more once you can sing along. Love the build up towards the end - reminds me of Give Me Love a little bit!
04 // Don'tThis is my jam! I find it so catchy and love it but why is there no "fuck"? It should "don't fuck with my love", right? It just sounds odd without the swearing. I suppose he left it out so the album is age-appropriate for everyone but when he starts touring I hope he adds it in!
05 // NinaAgain, not a fave but it is catchy and I love the overlay vocals at the end.
06 // PhotographSweet song, it's one of those that you feel really close to whilst listening to it. It kind of touches your heart.
07 // BloodstreamQuite an intense song and not one I was expecting. I think by this song on the album you can tell he's not singing about the same girl from the first album anymore. There's a completely different tone and subject matter that you get when listening to the album, it's not all sweet, naive first love anymore. You can see some things are the same just repurposed which is quite fun if you take notice of it. For example, my eyes are red / coloured crimson in my eyes (You Need Me, I Don't Need You - Live / Bloodstream).
08 // Tenerife SeaI have heard this song in live acoustic versions and absolutely love it. There was a performance I watched and he looked so vulnerable and nervous whilst singing it which was really sweet to watch. It's quite funny that there's still speculation about who this song is about - Taylor Swift being the obvious guess and after reading this I can see why people would think that. Anyway, I love this song and will be playing it on repeat for the next week.
09 // RunawayThis is the "Drunk" of this album - catchy and danceable but will never be a favourite.
10 // The ManA really honest song. Kind of feels like he had to do it in a rap to make people focus on that at first more-so than the the lyrics. This part made me really emotional.
I know you have a day job but mine is 24/7 / I feel like writing a book, I guess I lied in the hook / Cause I still love you and I need you by my side if I could / The irony is if my career and music didn't exist / In 6 years, yeah, you'd probably be my wife with a kid / I'm frightened to think if I depend on cider and drink / And lighting a spliff, I fall into a spiral and it's / Just hiding my misguiding thoughts that I'm trying to kill / And I'd be writing my will before I'm 27, I'll die from a thrill / Go down in history as just a wasted talent / Can I face the challenge, or did I make a mistake erasing? / It's only therapy, my thoughts just get ahead of me
11 // Thinking Out LoudLove love love. A classic romantic love song that will never get old. I feel like this is one of those great wedding dance songs or something that people will still be using in 50 years.
12 // Afire LoveThe way the music swells at the beginning is really touching. This is another one of those songs that will grow on me once I know the lyrics and can sing along to it. Love the end a lot, it will be stuck in my head for the foreseeable future.
13 // Take It BackBasically a sequel to You Need Me, I Don't Need You but the chorus isn't as catchy and feels out of place. That said, I really like a getting an update on how he feels about fame and his career 3 years later. For people that care it's really interesting to kind of analyse what he's feeling.
14 // ShirtsleevesYet another song that I'll adore once I know the lyrics. I really think lyrics are the heart of Ed's songs and without knowing them they can fall kind of flat, I don't think Shirtsleeves does though.
15 // Even My Dad Does SometimesOne of my favourite songs by far. Really uplifting and has a great message. I connect to it a lot and it makes me want to do more while I've got the chance to. I think this should've been in regular edition of the album.
16 // I See FireObviously I've head this before but I think it's a great way to end the album. It's not necessary because track 15 would've been a great ending but I do like that it's included for people who don't follow Ed online and know what he's up to all the time. I See Fire is such an incredible song because he plays every instrument on it himself and some of them he learned the day he recorded it.
Overall, I don't think Ed has suffered from the "Sophomore Slump" with this album but it's not as good as + and it never was going to be. I think we're all relieved to have new music from him and I have no doubt that the songs will grow on me just like + did. I'm a little disappointed that there's no hidden track like The Parting Glass and that he didn't include New York - I really loved that song even though he only played it at Madison Square Garden.
Ed said he wrote over 200 songs for this album and chose the ones that he never got bored of - I definitely see where he's coming from as he's got to play these songs for the next 2-3 years hundreds if not thousands of times but I honestly think there would have been some songs out there that would've made a more cohesive second album as 'Multiply' it seems a little bit scattered and experimental which is fine but unexpected. I look forward to listening to it a lot more and I'm 100% sure my opinions will change.
Let me know what you think! What's your favourite song so far? ♥
